Peace Love and Little Donuts

Woke up one morning and I just wasn't feeling diner, iHop or DD food. So I went to Yelp and found an interesting donuts place.

Pretty decent reviews on yelp and it was close by so I said why not?

The location is a bit odd though. It is located inside a gas station. There was one table outside and one table inside so this is definitely more of a pick up place.

Inside is pretty welcoming and clean.

Donuts deep fryer right in the open for you to see.

I got two Boston Creams and two peach donuts.

Boston Cream

I was not a big fan of this one. The cream just did not taste right. Dunkin Donuts' version is much better.

Peach Donuts
This one was better but still not great. I've never had a peach donut before so I can't compare it to anything but I feel like the peach should have tasted fresher. The donut was also a tad too sweet for me.

I'm definitely going back to this place the next time I am in Florida. It's different from your average donut chain and I gotta try their other flavors.

Sugar Cane Drink

Saw this place across the street from the Chinese Restaurant.

Their sugar cane "presser" machine is kinda cool.

Refreshing but I thought the taste was lacking. I wish there were more places that sold fresh sugar cane drinks so I can see if I really like it.

Jay Chou Drink

Saw this in an Asian supermarket and decided to try it because I like Jay Chou (I guess their ad campaign worked!)

I can't really describe how this tasted but if you are looking for the traditional milk tea taste, don't get this. I can't compare it to anything I've ever had. I'm not saying that's it's bad. It's just different. Also, it comes with a small bad of jelly pieces for you to put into the drink.

Blueberry Muffin

My first homemade blueberry muffin. Came out pretty good. Too bad I can't take all the credit since I made it from a box.

Next step will be to make it from scratch! I have a recipe already.

Herbal Jelly Dessert

First attempt at making my own sugar/coconut mix for my herbal jelly dessert.

My coconut milk to sugar ratio was off. I used the whole can of coconut milk and I thought I added enough sugar but it ended up not being enough. The mix is sweet but not as sweet as I like.

I will make more sugar water tomorrow and pour it in my coconut milk mix. Hopefully, that will give me the sweetness that I want.

Also, my herbal jelly was not as "silky" as I like. I will experiment with a few brands and see which one is the best.

Update (11-4-12):

This is the grass jelly that I used.

Brownies - Ghirardelli Walnut Mix

Brownie Glory Stealer

Labor day weekend has finally arrived and I'm torn between being happy that I have 3 days off from work and being sad that it is the unofficial end to summer. I think I'm more sad than happy but that's a whole other story.

As my Friday work day was winding down, I started thinking about what I was going to do this long weekend. I didn't come up with anything. I wasn't in the mood for anything particular and part of me just wanted to be alone and be a bum. So the work day ended and I went home with just plans for the rest of the day (which was to go for my daily walk and dinner with some friends). The walk was good btw. Got my 2.5 miles in, did some running (20 seconds) and ran up two flights of stairs.

Feeling pretty good about myself, I drive home, shower and head out for dinner.

My friend and I got to the restaurant early and we started talking to kill time as we waited for the others to arrive. As we were talking (mostly about food), it dawned on me that I could finally make my brownies this weekend! Yay, I can finally knock that baby off my list of things to do.

Friends finally came and we began our dinner. Details about the specific restaurant will be posted later. This post is dedicated to my brownies.

Ok, so I get home from dinner, wash up and go downstairs to see what's up with everyone. As I walk into the kitchen, I see my sis and some baking supplies out. I'm thinking yay, she's going to bake something. My happiness only lasts about 2 seconds because as I look a little closer at the supplies, I see the brownie mix that is next to it. It was MY brownie mix. HECK NO, she wasn't going to use MY brownie mix to make her brownies. I've been saving it for weeks and have been wanting to bake it myself. It's suppose to be the best mix and I wanted to be the first one to bake it. (Yes, I know I sound like a little girl who is throwing a tantrum about some silly little thing but if you only knew how much I wanted to use this mix myself, you would totally understand). Oh and btw, I had planned to bake brownies last weekend (during the hurricane) but my sis had beat me to it and stole my glory. I wasn't going to bake brownies after she made her own brownies AND a red velvet cake. Pshhhhh, nuh uh, not this time.

So long story short, I wasn't going to let my sister steal my glory again. I decided to make the brownies myself (at 10:30pm)!

And here are the pics.

Ahh, it's so nice to have a sis that has all the baking supplies needed to bake ;)

A friend recommended this mix when my brownies had turned out to be cake like the last time I made it. I've been meaning to buy it since but what pushed me to finally do it was when my manager recommended it as well. She had bought some into work and it was de-li-cious! She recommended the Ghirardelli Chocolate Triple Chocolate Brownie mix but I couldn't find that specific one.

Man, I was able to tell the difference right way. After mixing everything up, I noticed that it was really thick. I could tell that it was going to turn out to be the texture that I like.

And here is the end result...

I think it looks pretty good. What do you think?

Oh, I should mention that I did NOT eat these last night!! I was strong enough to wait till the next day to eat it. I helped myself to a piece and a nice cup of coffee and had it for breakfast ;)

What was my first impression? It was pretty sweet. The texture was good. It was nice and thick. Solid but not hard. Much better than the last time I made it (used a diff mix). The walnut was eh. There was something odd about it. It didn't taste fresh? Overall, I wasn't entirely happy with this and was little disappointed, probably because I was so hyped up about it. Don't get me wrong though. It was still a pretty good brownie. I'm going to give it another try later after I eat my lunch to see if my opinion on it changes.

Even though I was not ecstatic about these brownies, I'm not giving up! The next time I make brownies, I am going to get the specific mix that my manager used and see what's up. I can't see how I can mess it up. The instructions are really easy and it only takes about 10 mins to prepare.

Btw, guess what happens after I finish mixing. It had turned out to be a very small amount so guess what my sis does. She takes out another brownie mix and makes her own! Damn, if it had occurred to me that she was willing to make brownies using another brand mix, I would have saved my brownie making for the next day!

But it's all good. Here are some pics of her brownies.

(This was the mix I used the last time - I'm not a big fan of it.)

Can you tell from the pic that this mixture was not as thick?

Which one looks better? Hers is on the left and mine is on the right. Check out the size difference.

Unfortunately, I do not have any closeups of her brownies. She had taken it all on her trip before I woke up.

Alright, it's almost lunch time. I'm in the mood for some pan fried spam and rice.

Till next time!

::Update:: I just had another piece of it and it was really good!!!! It's not as sweet as I thought. I guess eating brownies first thing in the morning is not the right way to go.

I'm glad that not everything I like is unhealthy.

Financier Patisserie

There was some sort food  fair in one of the financial centers and guess what was brought home...a box of calories!

And no, I did not eat all of these cakes! I really didn't want to eat any to be honest but you know me...hard to say no to food...

Overall, I thought everything was good. Not my type of dessert though.

Homemade Dessert (bros)

Usually, my sisters make desserts so you can imagine how surprised I was when I discovered the below dessert when I went to my older bro's place. I had to help myself to a small bowl ;)

Please don't ask me what is inside. I have no idea. I think it's a bunch of different kind of tapioca?

Anyway, I remember this tasting okay ;P Not bad but my sis makes this better.

Rice to Riches

A couple of months ago, a certain friend was craving this so we went out to satisfy that craving.

Never been here before and was kinda surprised that I never noticed it before. I guess I just didn't expect kinda of place to be in that neighborhood for some reason.

Cute storefront if you ask me.

Cute inside too. Very colorful and fun. FYI - the seating is pretty limited. I think there were a couple of standing tables and 3 or 4 tables where u could sit.

I like their containers. I think I need to go back and buy some pudding just to get one of these containers. I'll use them to bring my snacks to work ;)

Looks lovely, doesn't it? ;P Yea - it's not the most appealing thing to look at but people love it apparently. I don't know. I wasn't a big fan of it that day. Maybe it was because I was really stuffed from lunch? I think I tried several samples and I didn't really get too excited about any of them.

Kinda weird, but now after looking at these pictures, I kinda wanna go back and give it another try. Hopefully, this time I won't be stuffed beforehand.

Friend got a hot chocolate. I think it was she said it was sweet but good. Can't remember anymore.

Funny comments on the store windows.

They should have a guard to enforce this rule!

Anyway, I know several people who raved about this place. As for me, I'm not ready to make a decision yet. I need to go back and give it another try.
